Manmohan (Moe) Sahota from Esquimalt, British Columbia becomes the first Sikh elected to provincial legislature.

In September under the direction of Mr. Dalip Singh Gill as the pioneer Principal Dasmesh Punjabi School becomes a full-fledged English-medium school. It teaches the standard British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum as well as two additional courses-Sikh studies and the Punjabi language.
