The City of Abbotsford's council played a pivotal role in the extensive deliberations surrounding the renaming of a portion of South Fraser Way to Komagata Maru, demonstrating a keen commitment to acknowledging and honoring this historically significant event. This involvement underscored the city's dedication to fostering cultural awareness and recognizing the profound impact of the Komagata Maru tragedy.
The city council engaged in thorough discussions, considering a spectrum of options to appropriately commemorate the Komagata Maru passengers. This was in response to a request from the Descendants of the Komagata Maru Society who wanted the community to recognize the importance of the passengers’ plight through various means, such as storyboards, plaques, or even renaming a park.
The City of Abbotsford chose to commemorate the Komagata Maru tragedy in two ways: by commissioning 3 commemorative plaques at the Sikh Heritage Museum and by renaming a portion of South Fraser Way to Komagata Maru Way. This involved partnering with local experts and organizations deeply rooted in the community, demonstrated a forward-thinking approach to commemoration. This decision affirmed the city's commitment to not only recognizing the historical significance of the Komagata Maru tragedy, but also to educating and informing residents about this crucial event in their local history.
