Chinese head tax certificate
Chinese head tax certificate.
1 certificate : col. ; of a Dominion of Canada Chinese Head Tax Received certificate. The certificate reads, "DOMINION OF CANADA/ IMMIGRATION BRANCH - DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR / RECEIVED FROM / - DERE HING - whose photograph is attached / hereto on the date and at the place hereunder mentioned, the sum / of Five Hundred Dollars being the head tax due under the / provisions of the Chinese Immigration Act. / The above mentioned party who claimed to be / a native of FONG DANG / in the District of SIN NING / of the age of 14 years arrived or landed /at Vancouver, B. C. on the 16th day of / May 1921, on[?] Empress of Russia. / The declaration in this case is C.I.[?] No. 36429 / Dated at Vancouver, B. C. on June 9th. 1921. / [signature] / CONTROLLER OF CHINESE IMMIGRATION." The top corners of the certificate have semicircle shapes with text inside, the left one reads, "NUMBER / 90552," and the top right shape reads, "NEW / C.I. 5 / SERIES."
There is a bust studio portrait of Deer Hing at the bottom right corner of the certificate. He is wearing a suit coat, a dark tie, and a white collared shirt.
