South Asian Settler Stories

The South Asian Studies Institute at UFV received the Dr. Hari Sharma Foundation grant in 2019. The foundation advances South Asian studies by promoting education in Canada, particularly as it relates to labour. It supports the development of cultural activity within the South-Asian community in Canada, and facilitates socially beneficial activities that disseminate knowledge regarding South Asia.

Through the funding support, the SASI collected settler interviews from those of South Asian descent across the Lower Mainland.

This page highlights each of those stories of settlement, migration and history in this Province. It is a resource tool for anyone wishing to engage in research about South Asian settlement in British Columbia.

We are grateful to the Hari Sharma Foundation for their support and funding.

*We would like to thank Ms. Harleen Jhinger, a BSW student at Laurentian University who interviewed community members for the Hari Sharma project and worked on subtitling videos*
